Funding update

Gisela Stuart has welcomed the announcement by Birmingham City Council that funding has been allocated for the redevelopment of Harborne Baths. The Council have finally authorised £12 million worth of funding for a much-needed new leisure centre in Harborne, the current one being in a very bad state of repair.

The new centre is set to be completed by 2011. It will be on Lordswood Road , at the same site as the current baths. These were built in 1923 and are in such a dire state that they will be demolished to make way for the new leisure centre.

Gisela has called upon the Council to provide better facilities since 2001. So far progress has been very slow and the Council have responded to Gisela in a confused and disorganised manner

Gisela said:

“I am pleased that plans for redevelopment are beginning to look more concrete. However, I have been campaigning along with my constituents for nearly ten years. I am disappointed that it has taken the Council so long to decide upon this funding, which is so urgently needed.

“I will be continuing to put pressure on the council to ensure that the application is not held up unduly at the planning stages.”
